the mages Mages belong to six houses of magic - Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Light and Void. Each mage is born with what is called a "birth element", and their magical abilities are limited to that element. Mages often collaborate to create new technologies by combining their elemental affinities.
Mages have a limited amount of energy that they can focus into learning and improving their powers, and as such are highly encouraged to focus on a small range of abilities. Some mages, however, prefer to use all of the powers they are able at the cost of strength. The education of young mages is highly regulated, and students are often evaluated for what abilities they will learn rather than choosing their own path. Mages are considered ready to pair when their formal education is complete, typically around age 16. Once they've joined a dyad, mages find themselves with increased magic energy, which they often focus into one favoured ability.
Mages are often the most noteable members of society, creating policy and technology with what they would consider their increased power over Animal-Shifters. Each house of magic has its own social dynamic, both in the realm of mages and in the world in general.
Below are more details on each magic house. Keep in mind that the following information is a guide of the cultural trends in each house, and not necessarily a strict instruction for how individual mages must act.

earth ☄ abilities Earth mages are capable of controlling the plants and rocks around them through their connection to nature and the earth. Any material that originates from the natural world can be shaped and manipulated by an earth mage as long as they have the requisite skill.
At a young age, earth mages are expected to decide between one of two specialties - plant life manipulation, or dense earth manipulation. While an earth mage can have rudimentary knowledge in either of these fields, in order to reach their full potential they are expected to choose one to focus on. Earth mages are known for having some of the most versatile powers because of their ties to the world as an entity.
Plant life manipulators' most common abilities include increasing plant growth rate, altering and moving current plant growth, and nutrient boosting.
Dense earth manipulators' common abilities include lifting masses of rock and ground, breaking up areas of ground, and sensing vibrations through the earth.
Though extremely uncommon and highly regulated, some earth mages have the ability to manipulate certain kinds of animal life in addition to plant life. Doing such requires years and years of highly regulated training alongside a natural affinity for "lifespeak", as it is often referred to in its teachings.
☄ dynamics Earth mages are known to have the best relationships with their animal-shifter counterparts. They are also the most likely to have pets and livestock. They tend to live in the lower levels and outskirts of cities, and are the group of mages most likely to be found living in shifter towns.
☄ roles Earth mages often participate in agriculture, with the largest hydro farms, the most common food source for most cities, a collaboration between earth and water mages. The ability for some earth mages to move large masses of ground also makes them fantastic in construction and architecture fields. Archaeology and history are also common paths for earth mages, as some find that they can "feel" the presence of artefacts in the earth.

fire ☄ abilities Fire mages are capable of creating and manipulating heat energy through their connection to the sun. In addition to working with actual fire, they can also create and alter heat without flame.
All fire mages are taught heat energy manipulation, with direct control of fire considered a specialty rather than the primary function of fire mages. Young fire mages are often tested in their general demeanour and aptitude for energy creation before being taught to manipulate fire directly. Fire mages most commonly use their abilities to heat and weld materials, and to create power and light.
Some fire mages are even able to create and manipulate lightning, although generally only those already skilled in controlling fire are able to do so. Because they are such a rarity, those who can manipulate lightning and other forms of plasma, like lava, are often encouraged to go into fields involving power, infrastructure, and natural disaster negation.
☄ dynamics Fire mages are inherently weakened during the winter season. They typically live closer to the equator where the sun is more present, although the strength of their powers isn't directly tied to day and night. Fire mages are considered valuable at the poles because of their ability to heat areas easily, and some fire mages make a living traveling to different wintry cities to help heat them.
Light mages are considered to be an evolution from Fire mages, as both gain their abilities from the sun and manipulate types of energy.
☄ roles Fire mages can often be found in the power sector, but are also great at military and defense. They are coveted for their heat creation and each town usually has at least one fire mage in its ranks with the sole job of providing warmth. Fire mages also are great at metal and glass working, and can become fantastic artisans.

water ☄ abilities Water mages can control and create sources of water thanks to their connection to the earth and all the water that it produces. They are generally able to change the state of reasonable amounts of water between solid, liquid, and gas with ease.
Because most water mages have the same basic ability to convert water states, water mages have a very loose, open education that revolves around personal growth and extracurricular skills rather than their abilities. Even so, water mages have several specialties to choose from such as mass ice creation, water lifting, and water walking.
Some Water mages are even able to alter the water inside of other things, and there are rings of healing Water mages who manipulate the water inside the human body in order to cure illnesses. Because of the difficulty of keeping the water attached to its host material, and the immense potential for abuse, those who learn to do so go through rigorous education and regulation.
☄ dynamics Water mages are known to have excellent relationships and friendships with Air mages. They tend to settle in areas near water and have made some of the most important archaeological discoveries in mage history due to their curiosity about the world's oceans.
☄ roles Due to their open-ended education, Water mages tend to be the most flexible of all houses and can be found in all roles of society. Water mages are generally the most considerate and emotionally developed of the mages and enjoy taking on social and charity roles. Those with healing abilities are coveted to take up careers in the medical field.

air ☄ abilities Because of their connection to the sky, Air mages can control the air in the atmosphere. They are able to separate and rearrange molecules, controlling the density and velocity of what many would percieve to be emptiness.
Young Air mages have an extremely well-rounded and disciplined education, learning about subjects ranging from writing and mathematics to art and music in addition to exploring their abilities. They are considered to be the most generally well educated after light mages. Some Air mage specialties include weather manipulation, changing the temperature of the air, and sound and vibration through air manipulation.
A small portion of Air mages are able to not just alter the velocity of particles, but alter the arrangement of them, and can create new compounds out of thin air. Air mages with this ability are often sent to work in extremely dry climates, as they can create water literally out of thin air.
☄ dynamics Air mages are ineffective in a vacuum-- atmosphere must be present for them to be able to use their magic.
Some Air mages even fear travelling too high because of their inability to function where the air is too thin. Despite this, Air mages prefer to live in the mountains, the most populous region of air mages resting on the Mt. Icarus range.
Air mages get along well with water mages, but have an extremely fragile relationship with Light mages due to their competing quests for innovation. Most Air mages insist that their education is vastly improved over that of light mages.
☄ roles Air mages, like water mages, are found in all walks of society due to the versatility and discipline in their education. Air mages can be competitive innovators and gravitate towards science and medicine over other career paths, but are also excellent educators.

light ☄ abilities Light mages can manipulate electromagnetic wavelengths through their connection to the sun. Light mages can work on a variety of wavelengths of light, not exclusive to visible light.
All Light mages are taught how to manipulate visible light before being evaluated for more specialized abilities. As a baseline, light mages can generally create light and alter its colour. The field of light magic is the most individual-specific of all houses, and light mages are encouraged to follow their interests in electromagnetic manipuation rather than taught particular abilities. Light mages can do things such as convert infrared and ultraviolet light to visible light, broadcast sound and information through radio waves, and create visual illusions. Due to the complex nature of Light magic, Light mages are expected to learn the mechanics of their abilities moreso than any other mage house. Because of this, they are considered to have the best non-magic education, learning mathematics and science directly alongside learning how to use their abilities.
Very rarely, powerful Light mages are able to create radiation, such as X-rays and gamma rays. Light mages who are discovered to have these abilities are often highly monitored by the government, as the ability to create radiation is considered extremely dangerous.
☄ dynamics Light mages are considered the most well-educated of all mages and occupy lots of upper class and government circles. They are weakened at night when the sun is down, and rely on a mutual relationship with Void mages to maintain their presence in the upper eschelon of society. Despite their night weakness, Light mages find themselves empowered by the indirect light of the full moon, and occasionally the stars. Light mages tend to live in the highest parts of cities, often creating floating spaces with the assistance of earth and water mages, in an attempt to bring themselves closer to the sky.
Having created the first floating spaces, Light mages angered their Air mage compatriots and have maintained terrible relations since.
☄ roles Light mages are considered the most innately powerful of all mages due to their ability to directly manipulate electromagnetism, and because of this are generally the highest class officials and members of society. Because they have such rigorous education, Light mages are often inventors and innovators. They can generally be found in all kinds of careers in the upper class sphere.

void ☄ abilities Void mages are able to manipulate spaces that are absent of energy, creating a sort of "anti-energy". Their power comes from the vacuum of space. Void mages have a versatile range of powers that often only function in a very specific set of circumstances and environments.
Void mages' education is extremely introspective and focuses just as much on meditation and mindfulness as it does improving one's abilities. Void mages are taught in the most isolated environment of all the houses, as young Void mages are separated from their parents for the duration of their education and kept in small class sizes. All Void mages are also expected to go through a two year period of silence-- no other house of magic has a comparable educational policy instituted on such a global scale. Common Void mage abilities include shadow manipulation, teleportation, and freezing.
As introspective and disciplined as Void mages are trained to be, it is unsuprising that the occasional Void mage is able to communicate with the dead. They are able to access the spaces of emptiness within the mind and reach out into what religious leaders often refer to as the afterlife, breaching their mind into spaces occupied by nothingness. It is rumoured that there are even Void mages who can occupy corpses with manifested anti-energy, controlling the husks like corpses.
☄ dynamics Void mages are by far the most stern and disciplined of all the houses due to their rigorous, isolated education. They often work hand in hand with Light mages to maintain a balanced and well-regulated society. Void mages are the most exclusive and secretive of the houses.
Void mages are at their weakest during the day and strongest at night, as light is an energy that occupies space, preventing Void mages from fully utilising their powers. However, Void mages are valued in dry, hot locales, where their ability to utilise anti-energy as a freezing force is used to cool hot communities.
☄ roles Because of their discipline and secretiveness, alongside their ties to the Light mages who rule the majority of the government, Void mages occupy the bulk of secret services and covert operations. They also work excellently as night officers in the police force. Conversely, Void mages tend to be very spiritual and are very involved in religious groups. Many temple leaders are Void mages. Most Void mages prefer careers that allow them to be nocturnal, as their abilities are often most useful in places absent of both light and other people.
