Clair Topin light mage | ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (he/him) | 48 | October 22 | androphilic ☄ abilities As light mage, Clair has control over visible light and can both alter the way that light hits objects and create light at will. He can temporarily change the colour of any nearby surface by touching it and can generate small orbs of light up to two inches in diameter that output 400-800 lumens within five feet of his body.
Clair's primary power is the ability to create fields of radiation through touch. The type of radiation his body emits is a sort of magic anti-radiation that, instead of interrupting cell growth, aids it. Archaeological excavation has shown that this type of radiation seems to have not existed on Old Earth. He can also generate small amounts of ionizing radiation that inhibit cell growth. Although he is able to use it offensively if need be, Clair uses this radiation to treat wounds and diseases that would otherwise take days, weeks, or even months of medical treatment in the span of mere moments.
From scrapes and bruises to tumors and cancer, Clair can heal almost any issue regarding human cells. When dealing with surface level injuries, Clair simply holds his hand over the affected area and encourages the cell growth, causing wounds to close and bruises to dissipate. To heal internal illnesses like cancer, Clair has the patient swallow a pill that allows him to "image" their body like an x-ray machine. He then locates the problem, and with a touch near the affected area, shoots ionized radiation directly into the malformed cells, killing them near-instantly. Clair can create a maximum foot by foot area of radiation of any shape. Generating this radiation is extremely draining to Clair, and he can only heal for around an hour before he becomes exhausted.
In addition to creating radiation, Clair is slightly radioactive with magic radiation, and both emits a small healing aura and is able to effortlessly heal his own superficial wounds in moments. Because his cells are constantly repairing and regenerating at an incredible rate, Clair is biologically nearly half of his actual age, and will likely live doubly as long as other mages. He also unconsciously emits light around him that fluctuates in brightness somewhere between 20 and 80 lumens, depending on both how exhausted he is and his mood.
With the assistance of temple research teams, Clair and the rest of The Temple of Meteora posits that t magic radiation didn't exist on earth until magic was introduced, and as such was never available to Old Earth's residents. The most concentrated natural spot of magic radiation is, in fact, Meteora Crater, where many pilgrims travel to be healed by exposure. According to Meteora, this form of radiation is a gift from The Gods and a true expression of The Light. Some people even insist that magic radiation IS "The Light", and those with the ability to use it were placed on Earth by The Gods themselves. Fanatics even claim that those who can emit magic radiation are The Gods manifested in tangible form, especially since Clair and Prophet Andora are the only two renowned light mages with this ability. Clair disagrees with the sentiment.
☄ role Clair is the leader of The Temple of Meteora and a member of The Imperium, and is known to the world at large as Andra Topin Clair. As the head of the world's largest religion and therefore a member of the world's oligarchy, Clair is arguably the most well-known living figure on Earth. Clair was trained to be the next Andra for 15 years by his predecessor, Andra Pater Amor, before her passing around a year ago. Clair completed the induction ritual the day after Andra Pater's death and is still adjusting to his new power and recognition.
As a world leader, Clair has a number of responsibilities that he shares with a select few advisors and Heiruses. He must study and determine new policy for both The Temple and The Imperium, inform The Temple's researchers of their next subjects to study, act as a mediator between the houses of magic, and quell conflict between his people and those of other religions, in addition to countless other responsibilities. He has five religious advisors who help guide his decisions and public image, representatives from each research department who funnel through his tutor to inform him of The Temple's scientific advances, two Imperium advisors who communicate with its other members to determine votes and policy, three Head Heiruses who communicate with Temples all across the globe, and countless other staff and underlings who he must balance communication with. Usually, the Andra has an Animal-Shifter counterpart, called an Ora, who helps manage all of these duties and staff, but as Clair has no dyad, all of the responsibilities are his alone.
Most of Clair's free time is spent on the streets of whatever city he happens to be in, communicating with and healing his people alongside to a team of bodyguards and assistants. Before he became Andra, following in the footsteps of The Prophet and healing Mettites was his primary role, so he does it out of both habit and enjoyment. When not surrounded by people and advisors, Clair loves to read novels and poetry from Old Earth, and occasionally writes his own poems.
☄ appearance Clair is tall and thin with a wiry build. He moves tall and upright and has impeccable posture, but isn't afraid to bend to the level of children and the injured while doing social work. He has dark, radiant skin and tan-gold eyes. He has near-black hair styled into a dread/undercut combination that he usually wears in a bun. He has a long, soft oval face, a flat nubian nose, and almond-shaped eyes. Both of his eyebrows have cuts toward the sides of his face, with his left brow having two slits and his right having one. Each Andra is given their own facial markings upon their induction that they are expected to wear, so Clair wears two white lines topped by a right angled sideways triangle on his cheeks. He also wears three white lines on his chin when he is on Meteora-related business, such as running services and visiting other Temples.
Clair has an impeccable sense of style that is not hindered by the clothing restrictions of being Andra. He is expected to wear all white during the day, and all black at night, which he is allowed to accent with golds and soft turquoise. He most often wears high-waisted skirts and oxfords, high-collared shirts, and one of many traditional capes and robes, pinned on by the symbol of Meteora- a circle with three perpendicular lines coming out of it. On the rare occasion he is not expected to wear the garb of an Andra, he enjoys holographic, sheer, and iridescent garb. Fascinated with clothing as a young man, Clair made all of his own clothing while he was a Heirus.
☄ personality Clair is gentle, kind, and considerate. He is assertive but soft and tries to speak for his audience, unafraid of sounding silly or dumb in order for someone less educated to understand him. He is generally mild-mannered but can be fairly exciteable in private, although he rarely has the opportunity for one-on-one interaction. He is very good at hiding his emotions, but tends to blossom when alone.
Since Clair was raised by The Temple, he is the pinnacle of their virtues. He is charitable and spends most of his free time using his powers to heal the sick and injured. He is honest and righteous, and attempts to right injustices brought forward to him, such as the corruption of independent temple leaders or hunger in areas of poverty. Lastly, his is humble and always reinforces the idea that his actions are done for the Gods, the Light, and the good of the world, and never for his own benefit.
☄ strengths
01.) Having spent his childhood as a postulant in New Rome's Temple, Clair maintains a body accustomed to odd labor. A large portion of his time as a researcher was spent restoring Old Earth books, where he had to carefully clean and rebind multiple books a day and do lots of lifting and organizing, and so he is fairly strong and has extremely dexterous hands.
02.) Spending his early days surrounded by books has another benefit: Clair is extremely well read, and has knowledge of all sorts of literature from both modern times and Old Earth. He is fascinated by the religious and governmental structures of Old Earth, and is especially knowledgeable about those subjects.
03.) Clair is unnaturally healthy because of his powers, and it is unlikely any sort of illness will ever effect him due to the regenerative rate of his cells. Although things like poison or moderate areas of physical damage can harm him, sickness and superficial wounds do nothing to him.
☄ weaknesses
01.) Working as a temple underling for half of his life and spending the other half training to take on one of the most important roles in society has caused Clair to take orders or give into others too quickly. He can be too selfless at times, sacrificing his own comfort and well being for others. Despite his strong virtues he can be a bit of a pushover, and often his advisors have to step in when it comes to Imperium and Temple matters.
02.) Clair responds very poorly to aggression and anger, and can almost shut down when they are directed at him. A Heirus that helped raise him before he was brought to New Rome had an incredible temper and would often scream at him and beat him, and Clair still suffers as an adult because of it.
03.) The incredible strength of Clair's power makes it incredibly draining on his body and he has to be careful to not overdo it. If he doesn't limit himself to under one hour of healing a day, his fatigue grows rapidly, to the point where he can hallucinate or pass out because of it. The more fatigued he is after using his powers, the longer it takes for him to recover. ☄ history As a newborn, Clair was dropped on the steps of a Temple of Meteora in a small town just outside New Rome and left in the care of the Postulants and Heiruses who kept the place in order. Though some temples do run orphanages in their towns, this one did not, and he was only saved by the will of one Heirus who insisted on it as a trial. As a young child, he was educated next to adults on the word of Prophet Andora and the guidance of The Light, and offered an extremely advanced education in science, surrounded by researchers and archaeologists. When he was old enough to work, he was placed under the care of a different Heirus who, contrary to the rest of the temple, treated him like absolute scum.
After a particular occasion where he was nearly beat senseless for improperly cleaning a statue, his power was discovered when his wounds healed within hours. Temple members saw the Prophet in him and insisted to those in New Rome that he be sent there to study, and at the age of 13 he was accepted.
In New Rome life was much different- to supplement the incredible education he was recieving, Clair helped maintain the Temple's enormous library, focusing on the Old Earth section. He restored countless damaged books and spent his free time absorbing as much information as possible until he was eventually noticed by Andra Pater herself. She saw his intellect and potential and was fascinated by his powers, so she tutored him herself in the virtues and way of The Light before promoting him to be a Heirus of New Rome's main Temple, the head location of all Meteora. As Heirus he spent his days giving sermons and healing pilgrims who, having heard of his power, ascended to the temple for his help. On his free days, he often took to the streets on his own to help those in need, which built an even greater reputation both with the Temple and the community. In addition to his work, during this time he was obsessed with his own origins, contacting as many people as he knew how to learn the identities and whereabouts of his parents. He was unsuccessful.
At age 32 he was finally chosen to be Andra Pater's successor, where he sat in on meetings both with Temple leaders and Imperium representatives to learn just what was necessary to rule a people. Additionally, he was assigned to be the primary point of contact between all of the Head Hiruses and coordinated events, policies, and sermons between the main Temple in New Rome and Temples of Meteora all across the globe. He became close with Andra Pater and her other primary staff, finding them to be the family he never had the opportunity to have.
When Andra Pater finally passed away, her Ora joining her days later, Clair was grief stricken as he took his oaths and was inducted to the position. Being so directly in the limelight was stressful, especially as many still insist he is either a reincarnation of Prophet Andora, or some sort of new prophet himself. Being known to the masses as Andra Topin after so many years as Heirus Clair reshaped his sense of self, and after a rough adjustment period, Clair has finally found himself ready for the search for an Ora, wishing for some of the weight of the world's burdens to be lifted off his back.
Clair currently lives in the second tower of New Rome's main temple, on an island coated with dense foliage placed there by Andra Pater, who was an Earth Mage with an affinity for trees. During his alone time, he likes to wander in the forest, which is filled with a variety of plant and animal life. He hopes whatever shifter comes to join him will enjoy the forest, too.
