the dyadic pact ☄ dyadic -- Of or consisting of a dyad; being a group of two.
The Dyadic Pact between Mage and Shifter is one of constant flowing magical energy between two persons. Originally Mages and Shifters were considered two parts of a magical whole, the union of their powers creating a sum greater than its two parts. In order to create a Dyad, a Mage and Shifter must exchange blood with the intent to become a pair. The vast majority of Dyadic Pacts are platonic, as romantic relationships between Mages and Shifters are frowned upon by the bulk of society. Dyadic Pacts are able to be broken through the same way that they are made, a transference of blood through the palm of ones hand.
Shifters are able to gain full use of their animal form through the Dyadic Pact and may use it as often as they please without any consequence to the Mage. Mages gain an increase in magical energy from belonging to a dyad, which many use to increase the power and utility of their primary ability. Early on in history, mages also discovered that if they made a blood exchange with a Shifter, they could extend their own lives by several years. From this discovery, Mages have continuously exploited the pact and have even gone so far as to make it mandatory in certain fields of work that Mages and Shifters pair for the "greater good."
The extended lifespan a Mage gains from joining a dyad is considered an open secret, with most mages aware of the benefit, but the secret held close from shifters. Nonetheless, the world runs on the bond between mage and shifter, their combined power too great to resist.
